Manufactured SmartDwellings

Over a hundred SmartDwellings have now been built at Mahogany Bay Village on Ambergris Caye in Belize. The developer built a factory on the mainland, and has been manufacturing panels and modules there, then shipping and assembling them onsite. They are very close to having excess capacity, and by the time you read this, they may be offering their SmartDwelling models for sales elsewhere.

Live/Work Units

The very first buildings to be built at Mahogany Bay were two live/work units with a shop below and one-bedroom unit above. The Rum & Bean on the right has an interesting story.

Garden Cottage

The Garden Cottage is a tiny one-bedroom cottage. Here, three of them front each side of a cottage court with their fronts angled to afford the best views to the water.

The interiors are stunning, finished with a combination of sustainably-harvested Belizean mahogany and white-painted wood.

Keeping Suite/Dream Suite

This four-unit building has two Dream Suites above accessed from a central stair and two Keeping Suites below. The Dream Suite is so called because the design came to Steve in a dream one night.

All of these SmartDwellings make great use of space within the walls for storage. As a matter of fact, you’ll see that they’re used frequently to illustrate SmartDwelling Techniques.

Family Cottage

The Family Cottage includes two bedrooms, each with a porch as shown here, plus a bunk room, baths, kitchen, and great room.

These SmartDwellings are designed for a salty coastal environment, so details and fixtures are selected because they wear better in this climate.
